I actually haven't worked with the C API and hate to attempt something undocumented for an official purpose. I wouldn't mind it for fun sometime though!

We have decided to try another, different type of work around wherein we provide a button in the action bar for emails only. It will serve our current purpose and get us by for now. I just hope nothing comes up in the future where we need to access the toolbar items.

(PS Friends and family are going to town with that penguin...I've about had it with him!)
